Classification Flashcards
(24 cards)
What is Classification?
Classification is the process of grouping living organisms based on their similarities and differences
Classification It helps scientists to:
• Organise living things
• Understand how organisms are related
• Identify new species
The Binomial System developed by
Developed by Carl Linnaeus.
What is The Binomial System
Every organism has a two-part Latin name:
• First part = Genus (always capitalised)
• Second part = Species (always lowercase)
The Binomial System example
✅ Example: Homo sapiens
• Homo = Genus
• sapiens = Species
What are humans called
Homo sapiens
The 7 Levels of Classification
- Kingdom
- Phylum
- Class
- Order
- Family
- Genus
- Species
The 3-Domain System (by Carl Woese)
Archaea
Bacteria
Eukaryota
Evolutionary Trees
These are diagrams that show how species are related through common ancestors.
The binomial name is always in..
Latin, and the genus comes first (with a capital letter).
Archaea are not the same as…
bacteria – they live in extreme conditions and have different genes.
The 3-domain system is based on…
genetic evidence, not just appearance.
Evolutionary trees show relationships, not…
lifespans or size of organisms.
What is classification?
Grouping living organisms by similarities and differences
Who developed the binomial system?
Carl Linnaeus
What are the two parts of a scientific name?
Genus and species
Give an example of a binomial name.
Homo sapiens
What is the domain system and who proposed it?
3-domain system (Archaea, Bacteria, Eukaryota) – Carl Woese
What is an evolutionary tree?
A diagram that shows how species are related through common ancestors
Which domain includes humans and plants?
Eukaryota
What does “species” mean in classification?
A group of similar organisms that can breed and produce fertile offspring
