Maintaining Ecosystem And Biodiversity Flashcards
(15 cards)
What is biodiversity again?
Biodiversity = The variety of different species of organisms on Earth or in an ecosystem.
More biodiversity = More stable ecosystems 🌿
Why is biodiversity under threat?
Caused by human actions
Caused by human actions like:
• Deforestation 🌲❌
• Pollution (air, land, water) ☠️
• Global warming 🌡
• Overfishing and hunting 🎣
• Waste and land use 🏭
This leads to:
• Habitat destruction
• Species extinction
• Unstable ecosystems
Why do we need to maintain biodiversity?
- To protect the environment
- To ensure resources last (e.g. food, medicines)
- To keep ecosystems stable
- To help species survive environmental changes
How do we maintain biodiversity?
1️⃣ Breeding Programmes
2️⃣ Protecting and Regenerating Rare Habitats
3️⃣ Reintroducing hedgerows and field margins
4️⃣ Reducing deforestation and carbon emissions
5️⃣ Recycling more waste
6️⃣ Educating people
1️⃣ Breeding Programmes
Help prevent extinction
Endangered animals are carefully bred to increase population
✅ Example: Pandas or tigers
2️⃣ Protecting and Regenerating Rare Habitats
• National parks, nature reserves, or marine reserves
• Help protect rare plants and animals
3️⃣ Reintroducing hedgerows and field margins
• In farmland, these provide habitats for wild species
✅ Helps insects, birds, and small mammals survive near crop fields
4️⃣ Reducing deforestation and carbon emissions
• Laws or rules to cut down fewer trees
• Encourage planting new trees
• Reduce burning of fossil fuels
✅ Less CO₂ = less global warming
5️⃣ Recycling more waste
• Less waste = less pollution = less landfill
• Means fewer habitats are destroyed for landfill sites
Why is high biodiversity important?
It helps keep ecosystems stable and supports survival of species.
Name 3 human activities that reduce biodiversity.
Deforestation, pollution, global warming.
What is the aim of a breeding programme?
To stop endangered species from becoming extinct
How do nature reserves help biodiversity?
They protect habitats and the species that live there
What are field margins and why are they useful?
Unplanted edges around fields that support wild species
