What is an open skill
A skill performed in a constantly changing environment, where the performer must adapt their movements in response to external factors. ( football pass )

A skill performed in a predictable and stable environment, where the performer can plan their movements in advance. ( free throw )

A skill where the performer controls the start and speed of the movement.

What is an externally paced skill ?
A skill where the timing and speed of the movement are controlled by external factors, such as the environment or an opponent.
(Returning a tennis serve or saving a penalty in football.)
Discrete skill
A skill that has a clear beginning and end.
( A tennis serve, a punch in boxing, or a golf swing.)

A skill that is made up of a sequence of discrete skills performed in a specific order.
(A gymnastics routine or a triple jump.)
Continuous skill
A skill that has no clear beginning or end and is repeated in a flowing, continuous movement.
(Swimming, running, or cycling.)
Simple skill
A skill that requires little concentration and decision-making, and has few sub-parts.
( Jumping or sprinting )
Complex skill
A skill that requires a lot of concentration, decision-making, and coordination of many parts.
( Performing a basketball dribble while dodging opponents or a gymnastics routine )
