Climate Flashcards
(20 cards)
What is weather?
The short term or day to day characteristics and changes in the atmosphere
What is climate?
The average weather in an area over a long period of time, 30 years or more. The climate of an area is often linked to its location on Earth.
Polar climate location :
found in the arctic and antarctic regions
Polar climate is :
extremely cold temperatures, low precipitation
Mountain climate location :
found at high elevations in mountain ranges worldwide
Mountain climate data :
- temp decrease with altitude
- can experience show with high altitude, even near the equator
Temperate location :
found between 30° and 60° latitude in regions like north america, europe and parts of asia
Temperate climate data :
- moderate temp. with distinct seasons ( spring, summer, autumn, winter )
- some areas have warm summers and cool winters, while others may experience colder, snowier winters
tropical location :
near the equator
tropical climate data :
- rainforests have dense vegetation , tall trees and wildlife like jaguars and monkeys
- savannas have grassland with scattered trees, home to lions, elephants, and zebras.
Arid (Desert) location :
found around 30° latitude ( horizontal) in both hemispheres, including the Sahara and more
Mediterranean location :
found in coastal areas between 30°-45° latitude, including southern europe ( portugal, spain, italy, greece) califonia, parts of chile, south africa, and australia.
Mediterranean climate data :
-hot, dry summers and mild wet winters
-Average summer temp. range from 25°-35°C, while winters stay around 10-15°C
tropical rainforest =
forests that occur in areas of tropical climate in which there is no dry season - it rains year round
Convectional rainfall =
occurs when the sun’s energy heats the surface of the earth, causing water to evaporate to form water vapour. When the sun sets, the temperatures cool and the water returns to the land as precipitation.
Name benefits of the rainforest :
- medicine
- oxygen
- various resources
- Undiscovered species
Adaptation =
is the process of adjusting to the natural environment to survive
What are 2 types of adaptations :
-Behavioural
- Physical
Behavioural adaptation :
how animals act ( feed, bread and move ) that help them survive
Physical adaptation :
Features of an animal’s body that help them survive.
