Corals and Mangrove Flashcards
(5 cards)
1
Q
Coral Reefs =
A
are large underwater structures made by tiny animals called polyps, providing homes for sea creatures and protecting homes for many sea creatures and protecting coastlines
2
Q
Coral algae =
A
tiny algae ( simple, plant like organisms that live in water environment. They can be really small or large )
3
Q
Living conditions for corals :
A
- Unpolluted and clean water ( pollution, such as chemicals and plastics , can kill corals and disrupt marine life
- hight levels of plankton : plankton are a food source for corals
- Shallow sea water : sunlight is needed for photosynthesis, and deeper water reduces light, limiting coral survival.
- Warm sea water : corals need it to grow and stay healthy. If the water is too cold, coral growth slows down
4
Q
Mangroves =
A
are trees and shrubs that grow in salty, coastal waters, with roots that stick out of the water to help them survive and provide shelter for many animals.
5
Q
Living conditions for mangroves :
A
-Soft muddy soil : their roots need loose, wet soil to anchor themselves and absorb nutrients
- Salty water : they can survive in salty water where most other plants can’t
- Warm temperature
: they grow in tropical regions because they cannot survive in cold conditions - Tidal flow : regular tides bring in nutrients, remove waste, and help distribute seeds to new areas, allowing mangroves to spread.
