Volcanoes Flashcards
(14 cards)
What type of boundary are composite volcanoes located on?
destructive
What type of boundary are shield volcanoes located on?
constructive
size/shape of composite volcanoes
- steep sides cones
- now as big as the shield volcano
- tall
size/shape of shield volcanoes
- low with gently sloping sides
- wide
Lava characteristics of composite volcanoes
- sticky
- doesn’t flow far
Lava characteristics of shield volcanoes
- runny lava
- thin
Eruption type and frequency of composite volcanoes
- explosive, with hot ash clouds
Eruption type and frequency of shield volcanoes
- frequent
- relatively gentle
Ash cloud =
Is a cloud of hot gas that bursts out from the crater
Lava flows :
Travel out the crater in all directions, usually at about 10-15 mph
Pyroclastic flow =
is a fast moving current of superheated gas and rock
Lava bombs :
shoot out of the volcanic crater nto the air and drop around the volcano
Landslides =
It is when rock and mud slide down the side of the volcano
volcanic eruptions often cause earthquakes that trigger landslides
Lahars =
Destructive mudflows or debris flows of volcanic origin, a slurry of pyroclastic material, rock fragments, and water, that flow down from a volcano, usually along a river valley
