Population Flashcards
(24 cards)
LEDC =
Less economically developed country
MEDC =
More economically developed country
Total population =
total number of inhabitants living in a certain given area
Death rate =
the number of deaths in a country in a year, per 1000 people
Birth rate =
the number of live births in a country in a year, per 1000 people
Natural increase =
The birth rate - death rate for a place. It is given as a percentage of the total population
infant mortality =
number of babies out of every 1000 born alive, who dies before their first birthday
fertility rate =
number of children a woman will have in her lifetime (on average)
life expectancy =
how many years a person can expect to live, on average. F>M
Total population change =
Natural change + net migration
Population Distribution =
where people live around the world.
population density =
describes the number of people living in a given area, usually a km2
What is usually shown by choropleth map
Population density
Name at least 3 factors that affect life expectancy :
- Healthcare access and its quality
- income/living standards = wealthier countries have better housing etc.
- education = better jobs, healthcare, lifestyle
- nutrition/lifestyle = diet, exercise, smoking, alcohol
- public sanitation = clean water, good sanitation and public health systems
Which countries have low population growth?
MEDC’s
Why do LEDC’s have high population growth?
- Less access to contraception
- Cultural/religious beliefs
- For children to help with work
Why do MEDC’s have low population growth?
- women are educated and work
- higher cost of raising children
- good healthcare
Resource =
things we need to live , or use to earn a living
Sustainable =
can be carried on into the future without harming people’s quality of life, or the economy, or environment
Quality of life =
level to which an individual is healthy, comfortable and able to participate in and enjoy life events.
Optimum population =
population which is in balance with available resources. Produces the highest possible standard of living
overpopulation =
occurs when there are too many people to be supported by available resources. Leads to a lower standard of living
underpopulation =
not enough people to make full use of the available resources. Leads to a standard of living being lower than it could be.
Carrying capacity =
number of people a place can support.
