cloning Flashcards
(11 cards)
What is a clone?
An organism that is genetically identical to another organism
What is cloning?
The process of making a cell or group of cells by non-sexual means.
What was the first mammal to be cloned, and when?
Dolly the sheep in 1997.
What is therapeutic (human) cloning?
Creating human embryos in a lab to extract embryonic stem cells.
What is reproductive cloning?
Cloning that produces copies of whole animals.
What is DNA cloning?
Producing copies of genes or DNA segments.
Name three possible uses of therapeutic cloning.
Treat infertility
Provide transplant organs
Treat diseases like Alzheimer’s, cancer, diabetes
How can cloning benefit plastic or reconstructive surgery?
By providing tissues or cells needed for cosmetic and reconstructive purposes.
How can cloning help with genetic disorders?
It may eliminate defective genes, improving health.
How does cloning improve understanding of genetic diseases?
By allowing scientists to study disease progression and treatment at the genetic level.
