Coasts Flashcards
(17 cards)
Name a coastal landform created by erosion.
Headland; bay; cliff; wave-cut platform; cave; arch; stack; stump.
What is a bay?
An inlet where the coastline curves inward.
Are bays formed from hard or soft rock?
Soft rock.
Are headlands formed from hard or soft rock?
Hard rock.
What happens to a cliff to create a wave-cut platform?
The cliff retreats (moves backwards) and leaves a wave-cut platform behind.
Put these landforms in the order in which they are formed: stack, arch, crack, stump, cave.
crack, cave, arch, stack, stump.
Are stacks formed from soft rock or hard rock?
Hard rock.
Name four landforms created by deposition.
Beaches; sand dunes; spits; bars.
What type of wave creates beaches?
Constructive waves.
Put these types of dune in the order in which they are formed: yellow dune, embryo dune, grey dune, fore dune.
embryo dune, fore dune, yellow dune, grey dune.
What is the first stage in the formation of sand dunes?
An embryo dune.
What is the type of grass that is very common in fore dunes and yellow dunes?
Marram grass.
What is a spit?
A long expanse of sand attached to the land at one end.
What has to happen to the coastline for a spit to start forming?
It has to suddenly change direction or shape.
What transportation process has to be taking place for spits to form?
Longshore drift.
What type of erosion is caused by the force of the waves smashing into the cliff?
Hydraulic power.
What is the name of the process through which the sea transports eroded material along the coastline?
Longshore drift.
