Coasts Flashcards
(15 cards)
Two types of waves
Destructive and constructuve
Destructive waves
Weak swash and strong backwash
steep, high waves that are close together
create a steep beach
weak swash and strong backwash
pull sand and pebbles off the beach (erosion)
Constructive waves
Strong swash and weak backwash
Low waves, more gently sloping with longer gap
Gentle beach
Strong swash and weak backwash
Build up the beach (deposition)
Erosion
Hydraulic action, Abrasion, Attrition and solution
Hydraulic Action
Water is forced into cracks in the rock, is compressed (squashed) and forces the rock apart
Abrsion
Loose rocks are thrown against the cliff wearing away at the rock like sandpaper
Attrition
Loose rocks are swirled around and are worn in smaller, rounder pieces
Solution (Erosion)
Seawater dissolves material from the rock
Transportation
Suspension, Solution, Traction and Saltion
Suspension
Fine sediment is carried along in suspension in the water
Solution (Transportiation)
Dissolved materials is carried along in solution-you can’t see it
Traction
Large pebbles and cobbles are rolled along the seabed
Saltation
Small pebbles are moved when a pebble hits another, causing it to bounce
