How does the sea erode and shape the land? Flashcards
(10 cards)
Erosion
Hydraulic action, Abrasion, Attrition, Solution
Transportation
Suspension, Solution, Traction, Saltation
Define Hydraulic action
Water is forced into cracks in the rock, is compressed and forces the rock apart
Define Abrasion
Loose rocks are thrown against the cliff, wearing away at the rock like sandpaper
Define Attrition
Loose rocks are swirled around and are worn in smaller, rounder pieces
Define Solution (Erosion)
Seawater dissolves material from the rock
Define Suspension
Fine sediment is carried along in suspension in the water
Define Solution (Transportation)
Dissolved materials is carried along in solution- you can’t see it
Define Traction
Large pebbles and cobbles are rolled along the seabed
Define Saltation
Small pebbles are moved when a pebble hits another, causing it to bounce
