Tectonics Flashcards
(9 cards)
Name the 4 layers of the earth
Inner core, Outer core, Mantle and Crust
What are tectonic plates?
Tectonic plates are ‘floating’ on the semi-molten layer of rock in the magma. Convection currents within the mantle cause the plates to move.
Name all of the Earth’s tectonic plates
Pacific, North American, South American, Antarctic, African, Indo-Australian and Eurasian

Describe a constructive plate boundary
Two tectonic plates move apart from one another.
The gap in the crust causes magma to rise and cool
Earthquakes and volcaneos are found here
Describe a destructive plate boundary
When two plates move towards each other, one sinks below the other one (aka subducted).
Volcaneos and earthquakes are found here
Describe a conservattive plate
When two plates are moving side by side, in different directions or the same directions but at different speeds
Earthquakes are found here
What is the mantle?
The mantle is a semi-molten layer of rock on which the tectonic plates are ‘floating’.
What is the inner core?
Heat from the core causes convection currents in the mantle, where the heated rock rises towards the crust.
What is the crust?
This causes the tectonic plates to move either towards or away from one another
