Coastal management
Cliffs geology is ‘London clay’ and ‘red crag’
Southern side is protected with groynes and sea wall which were rebuilt 1977 as land behind settled houses over £500,000
North side not protected it is a managed retreat, agricultural land
Cliff retreats 1-2m a year
1989 cliffs regraded, drains added and nettles and gorse added to slow erosion
1999 beach replenished
1998 300 tonnes of Leicester granite put at the base of the cliff by “the tower”, a historical landmark

Railway line on edge of sea
Rough seas means line closes
Train line main route London - Penzance
Line protected by 1800 sea wall
No refracting curve means annual repairs of £400,000
Climate change or rise in sea levels means close in train line, this would mean major effect on the economy
2014 floods damaged line- closed for 4-6 weeks
South west economy is losing 20million a day as a result of line damage

The Royal north Devon golf club near is suffering from coastal erosion
Club use to ask people to replace stones by hand - potwalloping
They have been ordered to stop by natural England
Adding sediment is interfering with the Northampton burrows site of special scientific interest
Golf course will lose holes 7 and 8

On the north Norfolk coast
One of the fastest eroding coastline in the world
Area was defended in 1958 but in 1995 council stopped repairing the coastal defences
Since 25 properties and lifeboat station have been lost to the sea
House’s were worth £80,000 but now £1
By 2020 18 houses and a grade 1 church could be lost to the sea
