Erosion Flashcards
(6 cards)
What is abrasion
It is when the waves throw sand, pebbles and even boulders against the cliff face. This works like sandpaper and the cliff is worn away. This is a very powerful form of erosion especially in storms
What is hydraulic action
This happens when the waves force water and air into cracks in the cliff face. The parcels of air are compressed by the surging wave but when the wave retracts the air expands explosively. This weakens the crack causing the rock to shatter
What is solution
This happens when the sea water dissolves soluble material from the rocks. It often happens along chalk or limestone coastlines
What is attrition
Rocks and boulders already eroded from the coast are knocked together and are slowly worn down into smaller, smoother, rounder pieces
What is erosion
Erosion is the wearing away of touch and sediment
What are the four types of erosion
Abrasion
Hydraulic action
Attrition
