empirical disputing -what is the evidence for the belief

participate in activities that are enjoyable pleasurable -> Behavioural Activation to create more positive feelings
The therapist needs to prove the clients value as a human being. The clients should be supported and appreciated regardless of what they say this is called unconditional positive regard

Q

Why is CBT considered more beneficial than drug therapy in terms of long-term effects?

A

P: CBT has no side effects compared to drug therapy.
E: CBT is potentially longer-lasting as it challenges irrational thoughts and thinking, whereas drug therapy is short-term, and symptoms often return once medication stops.
E: This shows the long lasting effects that CBT has on the clients If they stick with it as it treats the root cause, RWA

Q

Strength: What research supports behavioural activation as part of CBT for depression?
P: There is support for behavioural activation.
E: Researchers assigned depressed participants to a course of aerobic exercise, antidepressant drug treatment, or both. All three groups improved after four months, but the exercise group had significantly lower relapse rates than the medication group.
E: This shows that a change in physical activity can be beneficial in treating depression. It supports the behavioural approach, and the consistent improvement across groups adds to reliability, indicating that behavioural strategies are valuable components of treatment.

Q

weakness: How do individual differences affect the success of CBT for depression?

A

P: Individual differences
E: CBT requires a lot of effort and motivation from the client to be effective, as it takes around 6 months to succeed and therefore may be less suitable for those with high levels of irrational beliefs or stress.
E: This shows how individual differences play a role in the treatment’s effectiveness, It lacks representation, as findings may not generalise to all types of patients, especially those who are severely depressed and therefore takes a idiographic approach, .
