Q

How do we understand Kahlo`s emotion with the colour used in this painting?

A

Kahlo has used a bright red for the blood on the deer. This attracts our eye to her body and helps us understand her pain as red can be associated with pain.

Q

What colours contrast and where do we see this?

A

The vast majority of the canvas contains limited warm colours such as browns, creams and peaches. We see this in the deer and her forest surroundings. The bright blue in the background contrasts to this and helps our eye notice the distance in the piece.

Kahlo has used fresher yellowy green in the leaves of the cut branch lying at the deer`s feet. These colours give us the impression the branch still has life in it and therefore hope
