Combustion Flashcards
(10 cards)
What is a hydrocarbon
Hydrocarbons are very valuable natural resources that are used every day life. A hydrocarbon is a chemical substance which contains only hydrogen and carbon atoms chemically bonded together making it a compound/molecule.
Do all hydrocarbons have the same amount of hydrogen and carbon?
No, for example, methane is CH4 and octane is C8H18
What is a fuel?
Any compound which is stored energy
What is crude oil?
A mixture of different hydrocarbons and small amounts of other substances. Defined as refined petroleum (oil) it is formed from organic materials from sediments on the sea bed and then broken down and transformed over millions of years.
States some uses for hydrocarbons
Butane is a hydrocarbon that is used for fuel for cigarette lighters and as a propeller in acrosals, and manufacturing
What is complete combustion?
Complete combustion is when a fuel (hydrocarbon) is combusted in a plentiful supply of oxygen.
What is combustion?
A type of chemical reaction between hydrocarbons and oxygen under the conditions of????? CHECK WITH MA
What does combustion of a hydrocarbon and a plentiful supply of oxygen produce?
It produces carbon dioxide and water only.
Word equation :
CH4 + 2O2 (GOES TO) CO2 + 2H20
Genrally:
Hydrocarbon plus oxygen (goes to) carbon dioxide plus water
Explain how to test for carbon dioxide
Pump the bubble gas through the limewater, a positive result would be that it turns cloudy/milky and form a white precipitate (solid settles at the bottom)
Explain how to test for water
The water vapour should condense as it gets closer towards the Bunsen flame when it’s in the U-tube. As it condenses into water, it will react with the anhydrous copper sulphate, a positive test result would be the anhydrous copper sulphate reacts with the water and turns blue (from a white powder)
