Group 2 Alkili Earth Metals Flashcards
(6 cards)
1
Q
what are group 2 elements called?
A
Alkaline earth metals
2
Q
Describe the method of the test of group two metals with water
A
- Fill a test tube half full with water
- Drop a piece of calcium (testing element) into the water
- Hold an empty test-tube over the first test tube, as shown in order to collect any gas that is produced
- After one minute, test the gas in the top tube with lighted splint
- Add five drops of Universal Indicator to the lower tube
- Repeat the above, with each testing element, using fresh, clean test tubes
- Record results in a table
3
Q
Put the group two metals in order of reactivity, from most reactive.
A
Radium, barium, strontium, calcium, magnesium, beryllium.
4
Q
What happens when calcium is reacted with water?
A
Lots of effervescence, when tested for gas (pop and flame produced) positive, is present
5
Q
What is the trend in reactivity in group 2 metals?
A
As you go down the group, the reactions become more vigorous.
6
Q
Are the group 2 metals more or less reactive than the group 1 metals?
A
Less reactive
