Element, Compounds, Mixtures & Molecules Flashcards
(12 cards)
What is an atom
The smallest particle that can exist on its own, everything is made up of atoms.
What is an element
A substance made up of only one type of atom
What is a compound
Two or more different atoms that are chemically bonded together
What is a mixture
Two or more different elements and/or compounds that are not chemically bonded.
What happens to the properties of the elements that make up a compound?
They change when they become a compound.
When naming compounds, element that end in -ine, -one, -fur, -gen, GOES TO what?
-IDE
Eg.
Fluorine = fluoride
Chlorine = chloride
Sulphur = sulphide
Hydrogen = hydroxide
When naming compounds, element that end in -ium (the first element) GOES TO what?
-IUM
Stays the same, eg.
Calcium = calcium
Potassium = potassium

What is a molecule?
A substance that contains two or more atoms can keep on together.
Is a molecule an element or a compound?
A molecule can be either an element or compound however I think it’s more like a compound because while a molecule doesn’t have to be a compound a compound always has to be a molecule. But a molecule can be an element, because an element can be diatomic, triatomic and more, meaning it still has multiple atoms chemically bonded, they are just the same type of atom.
Key points for pure and impure substances
- pure substances are made up of any one type of particle
- Elements and compounds appear substances
- You can write a chemical formula of substance e.g. water is H2O
- Pure substances have fixed melting and boiling points e.g. water melt zero and boil at 100
- Mixtures are impure substances
- You cannot write a chemical formula for a mixture
- mixtures melt/boil over a range of temperatures/they have no fixed melting or boiling points.
