Cominform Flashcards
(6 cards)
when was it set up?
1947
What was it?
an organisation that coordinated communist parties across Europe under Soviet control.
It was created to spread communism and to keep Eastern European countries loyal to Stalin and the USSR.
Aims of Cominform?
- Control Eastern European governments.
- Spread propaganda and Soviet ideas.
- Unite communists across Europe against capitalism and the USA’s Marshall Plan.
- Stop opposition to Stalin’s rule in satellite states (e.g. Hungary, Poland).
Members?
USSR
• Satellite states: Poland, Hungary, Czechoslovakia, Romania, Bulgaria, East Germany
• Communist parties from France and Italy (not governments—just the parties)
Consequences?
• Increased Soviet control over Eastern Europe.
• Countries were told to reject Marshall Aid.
• Political opposition was removed—Stalin demanded total loyalty.
• Western countries saw it as a threat, which increased Cold War tensions.
Example of a consequence?
In Yugoslavia, Tito (leader) refused to obey Stalin fully.
→ Yugoslavia was expelled from Cominform in 1948.
