What was it?
rebellion against Soviet control in Hungary in October–November 1956. It was a major challenge to Soviet power in Eastern Europe during the Cold War.
what happened 23rd of October?
23 October 1956: Peaceful student protests in Budapest demand reform, free elections, and withdrawal of Soviet troops. Violence breaks out when the secret police open fire.
24th of October?
The USSR sends tanks into Budapest. The communist government collapses. Imre Nagy, a moderate communist, becomes Prime Minister.
What reforms does Nagy introduce?
Freedom of speech and religion
• Plans to leave the Warsaw Pact
• Wants Hungary to become neutral
What happened on the 4th of November?
Soviet tanks return in full force. Around 200,000 troops and 1,000 tanks crush the revolution.
What happens to Nagy and change in leadership?
Nagy is arrested, later executed in 1958. A pro-Soviet leader, János Kádár, is installed.
