Common Adult Health Issues Flashcards
(6 cards)
1
Q
What timeframe of disease becomes more common in older population? List common examples of this, in order from most to least prevalent within the list
A
- In aging population, chronic conditions become more common
- Examples include mental health conditions, back problems, arthritis, diabetes, heart/stroke/vascular disease, osteoporosis (mandible), COPD, and cancer
2
Q
What are some individual-level risk factors that can increase burden of disease across the population?
A
- Smoking
- Alcohol consumption
- Obesity
- Hypertension
- Poor diet
3
Q
What are the three kinds of prevention?
A
- Primary prevents disease
- Secondary prevents progression once disease occurs
- Tertiary prevents morbidity/morality once progression occurs
4
Q
What are the key prevention/screening test for adults?
A
- FOBT screening (aged 50-74); check for bowel cancer every 2 years
- Breast screen (aged 40+; notified 50-74); check for breast cancer every 2 years
5
Q
What are some preventative measures that can be done clinically? What is the downside of prevention?
A
- Weight management
- Lipid lowering therapy
- Blood pressure lowering
- Downside is that some preventions may cause adverse effects
- Also high cost (esp over long term) with slow ROI, so harder to incentivise
6
Q
What two factors come into play when measuring burden of disease through DALYs?
A
- How many years with disability/disease/risk factor?
- How many years early death due to disease/disability/risk factor?
