- Manage emotional investment (e.g. ?accepting gifts)
What are three skills that are important for person-centered communication with adolescents?
- Tell the truth, but leave room for hope
- Meet someone where they’re at (this can vary day to day)
- By reading verbal or non-verbal cues, tailor how much information you share based on patients’ wants
What steps can we take to support an adolescent and their parent in healthcare decision making
- Acknowledge that the adolescent may have developed autonomy/reasoning skills earlier in serious illness cases
- They still look to their parents, though, so involve in decision making process
- Check in with patient/parents/MDT members to figure out where the child sits on the spectrum
How can we make decision making/planning more enjoyable/manageable for adolescents?
- Link to things they’re interested in
- Esp in rehab, try and get them doing things they enjoy
Biopsychosocial/developmental factors that contribute to an adolescent’s health and wellbeing. Which factors are most important?

- Psychological factors
- Sociocultural factors (friends, school support religion etc)
Different strategies will work for different people, and often patients are more prepared for one thing than another.

- Talk about their interests (know some popular artists, trends, and TV series)
- Use context-appropriate humour (check in first)
- Understand that rapport grows over time
Connect the issue of ageism with the importance of inclusive communication with patients.
- Ageism is a form of unjustified discrimination, which runs directly against the idea of inclusive communication
- Some strategies to avoid it include avoiding assumptions, speaking to them like normal humans (only adjusting language where actually necessary), being collaborative > paternalistic, Focusing on capabilities/autonomy, rather than deficiencies/dependencies where appropriate
