What is medicine compliance?
When a patient’s behaviour coincides with medication and health advice.

What is adherence?
When a patient’s behaviour corresponds with recommendations from healthcare provider.
Active choice in following through with treatment plan.
What is concordance?
An agreement between the patient and healthcare provider.
What are some statistics regarding non-adherence? (3)
- 1/2 of all prescriptions are never dispensed.
- Adherence is greatly reduced in the first 10 days
- 10% of all hospitalisation and 23% of nursing home admissions are due to non-adherence.
What is primary non-adherence?
Occurs when patient doesn’t get their prescription filled after it is prescribed
What is secondary non-adherence?
Occurs after a patient gets their prescription dispensed
What is intentional secondary non-adherence?
Knowingly not taking medication after it is dispensed
What is unintentional secondary non-adherence?
Forgetting doses, accidentally taking too much or too little of a dose.
Major factors contributing to non-adherence includes…
health literacy, memory, multiple diseases, AD, costs, access to doctor or pharmacist, cognitive impairment, language difficulty
How can a health professional cause NA?
lack of clinical knowledge, poor attitude, time or willingness, inability to educate patient
How is adherence measured directly?
Blood levels, direct observation, biological markers
How is adherence measured indirectly?
Patient self-reports, pill counts, clinical response, repeats being filled.
