What is communication?
The transfer of information from one party to another
Why is communication important?
- Key to building trust with a client
- Many disputes arise from miscommunication rather than misconduct.
- Communication is one of the first characteristics that is noticed by a potential client so it is important this impression is positive.
Pros and cons of different forms of communication?
Email – quick, useful for passing on info. creates paper trail
Can be misinterpreted, risk of being sent to wrong person
Phone – Prompt, and when less formal comms are needed
Cannot see reactions
Letter – more formal, good for documenting comms.
Slow
Face to face – creates stronger relationship, read body language, can give impression of talent
Virtual – time effective, increased availability
What is negotiation?
A discussion with the aim of reaching an agreement
What makes a good negotiation?
- Understand desired outcome
- Understand fixed points and concessions
- Common ground and mutual trust
- A good negotiator
What makes a good negotiator?
- Preparation and planning
- Knowledge of the subject
- Ability to think clearly and concisely
- Listening skill
- Good judgement and general intelligence
