Communication Protocols Flashcards
What is an Ethernet?
A network protocol that controls how data is transmitted over a lan. It defines the networking protocol and the physical plugs used.
What is WiFi?
A communication which devices can communicate with each other using any cabling. It uses radio waves to connect on a lan. May require a password.
How do devices pick up WiFi signals?
It must have the relevant technology incorporated. WiFi signals do not travel very far.
What is Bluetooth?
A short range radio technology aimed at simplifying communications among enabled devices with a range of up to 10m. It used radio waves to connect devices and when devices want to communicate they need to pair. Has a range of 100m. Acts as a gateway.
What is voice over internet protocol?
Allows telephone calls to be made over digital computer networks including the internet. It converts analogue voice signals into data packet and supports real time two way transmission of conversations. Has a range of 100m. Acts
What is radio frequency identification?
Involves the use of radio waves to read and capture information stored on a tape attatched to an object. A tag can be read from up to serveal feet away and does not need to be in the direct line of sight from the reader. Tags are activated by radio waves. Does not require human intervention. More data can be stored. Has both read and write capabilities.
