Transmission Media Flashcards
(6 cards)
What is broadband?
A wide bandwidth data transmission which transports multiple signals and traffic types. Refers to any high speed internet access that is always on.
What is bandwidth?
A measure of the capacity of a communication channel. The range of frequencies that a channel can handle.
What are the features of unshileded twisted pair?
-consists of 2 independently insulated wires twisted around one another
-reduced signal loss
-allows for high speed data transmission
-cheap
-used for short distances
-suspictable to interference
What are the features of shielded twisted pair?
-copper shielding around each pair
-suitable for environments where electrical interference may be an issue
-100m distance
-harder to install
-supports higher transmission rates
What is fibre optic?
Uses fine strands of glass to transmit moduluated light beams at very high speeds over long distances. It has secure data transmission
. Transmits in one direction. Hugh bandwidth and security. Requires specialist equipment to install.
What is TCP/IP?
Dictates how information should be packaged and sent and received. Handles file transfer between different computers and is responsible for transferring packets of data.
