blogger
Author of the blog. Similar to an editorial section in a newspaper, blogs reflect the interests, opinions and personalities of the author called the blogger, and sometimes website visitors.
blog/weblog
Is an informal website consisting of time-stamped articles, or posts, in a diary or journal format, usually listed in revers chronological order.
browser
Is an application that enables users with an Internet connection to access and view webpages on a computer or mobile device.
chat
Is a real-time conversation that takes place on a computer or mobile device with many online users.
chat room
Is a website or application that permits users to chat with others who are online at the same time.
Chrome
Google’s Chrome is one of the newer browser offerings, first released in 2008. This free browser is available for Windows and Mac OS and must be downloaded and installed. It includes a large number of security features. Chrome has independent tabbed browsing; if one tab develops a problem, the other tabs continue to function.
cybercafe/Internet cafe
A location that provides computers with Internet access, usually for a fee. Cybercafes exist in cities around the world.
discussion forum/message board
An online area in which users have written discussions about a particular subject. To participate in a discussion, a user posts a message, called an article, to the newsgroup, and other users in the newsgroup read and reply to the message.
domain name
A text-based name that corresponds to the IP address of a server, that hosts a website. A domain name is part of the web address that you type in a browser’s address bar to access a website.
e-commerce/electronic commerce
A business transaction that occurs over an electronic network such as the Internet.
email/electronic mail
The transmission of messages and files via a computer network.
email list/electronic mailing list
A group of email addresses used for mass distribution of a message.
email program
Used to create, send received, forward, store, print and delete email messages. Email programs are available as desktop apps, web apps, and mobile apps.
emoticons
Use emoticons to express emotion. Popular emoticons include:
:) Smile :| Indifference :o Surprised :( Frown :\ Undecided
;) Wink
favorites/bookmarks
Are links to preferred websites.
Firefox
Developed by the Mozilla Corporation for computers running Windows, Mac OS, and Linux. It is recognized for its extensive array of plug-ins.
FTP
File Transfer Protocol is an Internet standard that permits file uploading and downloading to and from other computer on the Internet.
graphic
A visual representation of non text information, such as a drawing, chart, or photo.
home page
Refers to the first page that is displayed on a website.
