Outline NSI
Normative Social Influence- need to be liked can explain conformity as people will follow the majority in order to gain social acceptance and lead to compliance
Evaluate NSI
Individual differences in how much people want to be liked by others-not everyone will conform. Asch interviewed after and p said they conformed to avoid rejection
Variables that affect conformity
Group Size
Unanimity
Task Difficulty
Group Size
The no. of participants in a group. Asch varied the no. of confederates and found conformity increased to 31.8%
Unanimity
The no. of participants who agree. Asch sometimes arranged for a confederate to give a different answer to the majority which reduced conformity
Task difficulty
How complicated and ambiguous the task was. Asch made the right answer less obvious by having lines of similar length which increased conformity
Difference in conformity: easy+ hard task condition
Increased task difficulty the more likely p are to conform as they don’t know if their answer is right=ISI
More difficult, increased likelihood of conforming to majority than in the easy task due to need to be right
