-she was declared illegitimate
-studied theology and was a moderate Protestant
Elizabeths aims
- She wanted the Church of England to be Protestant in doctrine yet she still wanted to keep aspects of traditional worship

- reaction to the religious divisions in England
When was the Act of Supremacy passed
1559- reiterated Henrys 1534 act of supremacy in 1534 by stating that the Church of England was indepedent of Rome and Elizabeth as Supreme Governer of the Church
When was the Act of Uniformity passed
1559- established the Church of Englands religious doctrine and legitimated the Book of Common prayer
The book of common prayer
- sets out prayers and services
- Protestant in doctrine but contained elements of traditional worship- clergymen could wear vestments
-combined 1549 and 1552 prayer books
39 Articles
1563- states the Church of Englands position in relation to the Catholic Church and radical Protestants
Elizabeths reluctance to marry
- Had foreign suitors such as Phillip of Spain, Prince of Eric of Sweden but she may have never intended to marry them but kept relations with them- shows her diplomatic genius
-Robert Dudley was a favourite but he was already married but he had considerable influence

1583- in response to the Throckmorton Plot( a plot to assassinate the Queen
- Was written in vase the Queen was murdered and had not chosen a successor - gave power to execute the Queens killer and power to choose the new monarch
Duke of Anjou
-Courted the Queen in 1579
-French Catholic
-She did appear to like him and gave her extravagant presents
-The protestant factionapplied considerable pressure on her and did not want her to marry the Duke becayse he was catholic
The throckmorton plot
1583- plot to assassinate Elizabeth accomponied by the invasion of England by the Duke of Guise
-Terrified Elizabeths closest ministers and they wanted to have a backup plan in case she was killed
Mary queen of scots
- She was next in line to the throne, favoured by Catholics
-She had fled to England after a defeat in 1568
Ridolfi plot
1572- assassinate Elizabeth and put Mary on the throne
Babington Plot
1586- plot to assassinate Elizabeth and the Duke of guise invading England- Mary was found to be implicated in this plot
Why was Elizabeth reluctant to execute Mary following the Babington Plot
-She didnt want to condone the murder of a monarch
-Mary was her cousin and her execution would anger the Catholic community
-It could give Spain an excuse to invade England
Reasons to execute MARY
-England was already at war with Spain and Spain was planning their Armada
- mary had been found guilty of treason
