Control And Communication Flashcards
(21 cards)
What are the 3 main parts of the brain?
Cerebrum
Cerebellum
Medulla
What does the cerebrum do?
Allows conscious thought and memory, gathers information and sends instructions
What does the cerebellum do?
Controls balance and coordination
What does the medulla do?
Controls breathing and heart rate
What does the central nervous system include?
Brain and spinal cord
What does the nervous system include?
CNS
All the other nerves
What do sensory neurons do?
Transfer signal from receptor to CNS
What do inter neurons do?
Process information from sensory neurons
What do moter neurons do?
Transfer signal from CNS to an effector, which causes an action
What are effectors?
May be a muscle (rapid response)
Or a gland (slower response)
What is a reflex action?
Involuntary response to a stimulus to avoid harm
Where does the signal involved in a reflex action usually run to?
Spinal cord
How is information transferred within neurons?
Electrical impulses
What is the small gap between two neurons called?
Synapse
How is information passed across the synapse?
Neurotransmitters
What are hormones and what do they do?
Proteins
Act as chemical messengers
What system are the glands which produce hormones from?
Endocrine system
How and where are hormones detected?
Receptors on the target cell
What 2 hormones control the glucose concentration of the blood?
Insulin
Glucagon
Where are insulin and glucagon produced?
Pancreas
What do insulin and glucagon act on?
Liver
