Ecosystems Flashcards
(26 cards)
What is a species and what can they do?
Group of organisms which breed to produce fertile offspring
What is a population?
Number of individuals of same species in an area
What is a habitat?
Place organism lives
What is a community?
All organisms in an area
What is an ecosystem?
All living organisms in area
And all non-living components they interact with
What does communities + habitat equal?
Ecosystem
What is a biodiversity?
Range of species which live in ecosystem
What is a niche?
Role organism plays in environment
What does a food chain show?
feeding relationship between different organisms
Grass > Grasshopper > Starling
What do the arrows in a food chain represent?
Direction of energy flow
What do all food chains begin with?
Producer
What do food webs show?
Several food chains joined together
What is a predator?
Organism which eats other animals
What is prey?
Organism which is eaten by other animals
What is a herbivore?
Animal which only eats plants
What is a carnivore?
Animal which only eats other animals
What is an omnivore?
Animal which eats both plant/animal material
What happens when population of species in food chain changes?
Knock on impact on other species
What happens if population is reduced or completely removed?
Population predators decrease
Population prey increase
Population competition increase
When does competition occur?
When resources limited
What type of resources do organisms compete for?
Food
Water
Space
Mates
What are the two different types of competition?
Intraspecific and Interspecific
Where does intraspecific competition occur?
Members of same species
Where does interspecific competition occur?
Members of different species
