Photosynthesis Flashcards
(12 cards)
What is photosynthesis?
Process used by green plants to produce sugar (glucose)
Where does photosynthesis occur?
Chloroplasts
What makes the plants green?
Chlorophyll in chloroplasts
What are the stages of photosynthesis controlled by?
Enzymes
What is stage 1 of photosynthesis called?
Light reactions
What is stage 2 of photosynthesis called?
Carbon fixation
What happens during stage 1 - light reactions?
- Light energy is absorbed by chlorophyll and converted into chemical energy
- Chemical energy is used to split water into hydrogen and oxygen, and produce ATP
- Oxygen will diffuse out of cell, and hydrogen and ATP will move to stage 2
What happens during stage 2 - carbon fixation?
- Hydrogen (from light reactions) and carbon dioxide combine to form glucose
- Carbon fixation also requires ATP (from light reactions)
Photosynthesis word equation
Water + carbon dioxide >light energy> glucose + oxygen
What is the glucose produced in photosynthesis used for?
Starch
Energy
Cellulose
What can a limiting factor to to the rate of photosynthesis?
Reduce it
What are 3 limiting factors?
Light intensity
Temperature
Carbon dioxide concentration
