Producing New Cells Flashcards
(16 cards)
What is mitosis?
Process of cell division
How do unicellular organisms reproduce?
Mitosis
What do multicellular organisms need cell division for?
Growth and repair
What is the chromosome complement?
Number of chromosomes in nucleus
What is a diploid cell?
Two matching sets of chromosomes
What is a haploid cell?
One set of chromosomes
What is the aim of mitosis?
Produce two identical daughter cells
What happens during mitosis?
- Chromosomes in the parent cell become shorter and thicker
- Chromosomes are replicated
- The nucleur membrane breaks down
- Each chromosome becomes attached to a spindle fibre at the equator
- Chromatids are pulled apart to either pole by spindle fibres
- A nuclear membrane forms around each group of chromasomes
- The cytoplasm divides to produce 2 new daughter cells identical to a parent cell
What are specialised cells?
Cells which have a particular function
What are stem cells?
Unspecialised, have the potential to become any type of cell
What can stem cells do?
- Produce new stem cells (self renew)
- Produce specialised cells
Where are embryonic stem cells found?
Embryo
Where are tissue stem cells found?
Different tissues in the body
What do specialised cells do?
Group together to form tissues
What do tissues do?
Group together to form organs
What do organs do?
Work together in different systems
