Convection Flashcards

1
Q

What is the process of convection?

A

When a fluid is heated, the particles gain energy which causes them to move and therefore spread out more. This makes the area of hot fluid less dense than the cold surroundings. It rises upwards and pulls in cold fluid to replace it

Q

Can convection happen in solids? Why?

A

No as the particles are in fixed positions so they cannot flow.

Q

What is the process of evaporation?

A

Particles in liquids move around at different speeds. These particles need enough energy to break through the surface of the liquid (a force greater than the surface tension is needed). Therefore, only the fastest particles escape and take their heat energy with them so the liquid loses energy and cools

Q

What is convection?

A

Hot fluid rising as the particles move around more and get further apart, making the fluid less dense
