Coordinate Planes Flashcards
(10 cards)
What is a coordinate plane?
A two-dimensional surface formed by two perpendicular number lines crossing at the origin
What are the names of the two axes?
The horizontal line is the x-axis, and the vertical line is the y-axis
What is the origin
The point (0,0) where the x and y-axis intersect
How many quandrants are there and how are they numbered
Four quandrants, numbered in roman numerals, starting from the upper right
Specifically |, ||, ||| (imagine there’s a line on the top and bottom for #3), and lastly IV
Which signs do x and y have in quadrant II?
X is negative and y is positive
Where is Quandrant IV located and what are the signs?
Lower right reigon; x is positive and y is negative
What does an ordered pair (x,y) represent?
The x and y are place holders for numbers
A pointed located x units right (or left if negative) of the origin y units up (or down if negative)
How do you know a point lies on the axis
If either x = 0 (On the y-axis) or y = 0 (on the x-axis_
How do you read a point?
The number that stars first is the x axis, you move right or left on the x-axis depending on what it says. The second number is the y-axis, you move up or down depending on what it says?
What is a scale?
What the x and y-axis are counting by
