Correct Extended Response Flashcards
(19 cards)
What are hormones
chemical substances that act as messengers
produced by endocrine glands and act on specific organs or cells ( target organ and target cells)
What does the hypothalamus do
it always checks the internal environment, if there is a problem the hypothalamus produces hormones to signal the pituitary glands to release hormones,
regulates homeostasis
the checks are co ordinated by the nervous system
Pituitary glands (master gland)
get a signal from the hypothalamus to release hormones when there is a problem
it regulates homeostasis
checks are co ordinated by the nervous system
releases hormones to mainatian homeostasis
Endocrine glands
hypothalamus, pituitary glands, thyroid gland, thymus, adrenal gland, pancreas, ovary (female) pineal gland, pathyroid gland, kidney, testis(male)
What are the two important hormones for blood sugar control
insulin removes sugaar from the blood stream and glucagon produces stored sugar into the blood stream, those hormones are released by the pancreas
Diabetes
it is a disease the body doesn’t make or recognise a persons insulin
Type 1 and 2 diabetes, symptoms
1
symptoms: thirsty, more urinating, hunger, losing weight without trying, mood changes, tired, weak, blerry visione
2
symptoms: thirsty, urination, hunger, weight loss, tired, blurry vision, slow healing sores, infections, numb/tingling in feet-hand, skin darkens in armpits/neck
Type 1 and 2 diabetes causes
1
causes:genes passed on which increase chance of development environmental factors.
2
causes:obesity, overweight
Type 1 and 2 diabetes effects
1
effect: higher risk of developing heart disease/stroke eye and kidney disease
2
effects:damaged blood vessels causes coronary heart disease and stroke
What is the pancreas
it is an endocrine gland, the endocrine glands are int the islets of langerhans
Type 1
another name juvenile
cells no longer make insulin
islet cells destroyed by the immune system
(autoimmune disease
Type 2
another name adult-onset
insulin made normally but the body cells donot use it
more insulin is produced to compensate
the islet cells eventually can no longer keep up with the demand
Increasing numbers of diabetics
life style (exercise, snacking)
changes of diet (refined sugar, saturated fats)
migration and change of diet.
Treatment for increasing numbers of diabetics
intravenous or oral doses of insulin at regular intervals
strict diet and meal times
