Nervous System Flashcards
(12 cards)
Define nervous system
Network system is a communications network that controls all other systems in your body
Centeral nervous system
Made up of brain and spinal chord, receive information then sends out message telling body how to respond
Peripheral nervous system
Primarily the nerves which send the message to and from the CNS to other parts of your body
3 types of neurons
Motor neurons, sensory neurons, connector neurons
Motor neurons
Carry message from CNS to effectors
Connector neurons
Transmit messages between neurons in the CNS
Sensory neurons
Have specialise receptors which are sensitive to stimuli eg heat/light, carry messages from CNS to cells in sense organs eg eye, ear, tongue, skin
The brain
Cerebrum, cerebellum, brain stem/medulla and spinal chord, hypothalamus
Cerebrum
Occupies mor than 80% of brain
Function: controls conscious thoughts and the intentional (voluntary) movement ofevery body part e.g. physical pain, sound heard, light seen
Cerebellum
Located where skull curls inwards
Function: responsible for co-ordination/balance
Brain stem/medula and spinal chord
Lower part of brain stem/medulla seen where spinal chord widens after passes skull
Function: controls body’s vital functions e.g. breathing, blood pressure
Hypothalamus
Conjunction with pituitary gland, links nervous system and endocrine system
Function: maintains homeostasis of the body
