Correlation Flashcards
What is a correlation
Investigates the association between 2 variables- the 2 variables are called co variables
How do correlations differ between experiments
Variables are measured instead of manipulated like in experiments
In correlation only an association is found so no causes and effect relationships found
What is negative correlation
As one variable increases the other variable decreases
Has a correlation coefficient of less then 0
What is positive correlation
As one variable increases another variable increases
Correlation coefficient of more than 0
What is a zero correlation
No relationship found between co variables
Correlation co efficient equal to 0
What is a curvilinear correlation
A non linear relationship between co variables
Strengths of correlations
Justify further investigation as correlation shows trends in data
Secondary data can be used in correlations which is less time consuming
The procedures in a correlation can be repeated
Weaknesses of correlation
Difficult to establish a cause and effect relationship
Correlation is misinterpreted if presented to the public by media
