What is a Correlation?

A relationship between two co-variables

1

Describe a positive correlation

A positive correlation is where the value of one co-variable increases the value of the other also increases

2

Describe a negative correlation

As the value of one co-variable increases, the other value decreases

3

Describe no correlation

There is no relationship between co-variables, any relationship is down to chance

4

Fill the blank: Correlation does NOT equal ___

Causation

5

Name the three possibilities of explanation for relationships in correlations

1) x caused y
2) y caused x
3) z caused both x and y

6

What is the third variable called?

The intervening variable

7

Fill the blanks : In correlational designs there are no ___ ___ or ___ ___, only co-variables.

Independent variable, dependent variable

8

Give a one tailed correlation

There will be a significant correlation between ...

9

Give a two tailed correlation

There will be a significant correlation between ...

10

Give a null correlation

There will be no significant correlation between ... Any relationship is due to chance.

11

What is the correlation co-efficient?

A number measuring the strength and direction of a correlation

12

Name the three possible correlation strengths

Perfect, weak and no

13

Two advantages of correlations

- No manipulation of behaviour occurs, meaning useful where experiments are unethical.
- Gives precise information of the degree of relationships between co-variables

14

Two disadvantages of correlations

- Only reliable if the co-variables are accurate
- No cause and effect can be inferred
