CP2 Forces and Motion Flashcards
(29 cards)
What is a vector quantity?
one that has size and a specific direction. i.e. force
What is a scalar quantity?
one that has size but no specific direction. i.e. mass
What is velocity?
Velocity is speed in a stated direction. Velocity is a vector, speed is a scalar.
What is velocity measured in?
metres per second m/s
What is the formula for (average) speed?
(average) speed = distance / time
What is the formula for gradient?
gradient = change in y / change in x
How do you find speed on a distance-time graph?
find the gradient
What is the formula for acceleration?
acceleration = change in velocity / time
What is acceleration measured in?
m/s2 (metres per second squared)
What does v stand for in the acceleration equation?
v - final velocity
What does u stand for in the acceleration equation?
u - initial velocity
On a velocity-time graph the steeper the gradient the greater the _______________.
acceleration
How do you find acceleration on a velocity-time graph?
find the gradient
What is the formula for area of a rectangle?
base x height
What is the formula for the area of a triangle?
1/2 base x height
How do you find distance travelled on a velocity-time graph?
Find the area between the graph line and the time axis
How do you use light gates determine the speed of an object?
first measure the length of the object that passes through the gate. Take the time recorded by the light gate. Use the formula speed = distance/time
Newtons 1st law part one.: when resultant force on a body is zero it is either ….
… moving at constant speed or is at rest
Newtons first law part two: when resultant force on a body is not zero it is ….
… changing speed or direction.
What is Newton’s second law (formula for force)?
(resultant) force = mass x acceleration
What are forces measured in?
newtons (N)
Newton’s third law is about a pair of forces. Give two similaraites between these forces and two differences
They forces are: the same size, the same type of force, in opposite directions, acting on different objects
What is Newton’s third law?
When two objects interact they exert equal and opposite forces on each other.
Weight is the amount of _ _ _ _ _ _ _ _ _ _ _ _ _ _ _ _ . Weight is measured in _ _ _ _ _ _ _ _ _ _.
Weight is the amount of force which gravity pulls on an object with. Weight is measured in Newtons.
