Principles of high quality CPR
- Firm, flat surface
- Compressions at the correct rate and depth
- Allow chest to return to its normal position after each compression
- Minimise interruptions to chest compression
- Avoid excessive ventilations
Infant
Person younger than 1 year
Child
1 - onset of puberty
Adolescent
Onset of puberty - adulthood
Compressions
- Ensure personal is on their back on a firm surface
- Kneel beside their chest
- Heel of the hand in the centre of the test and interlace your fingers to hold them up off the chest
- Lock your elbows to keep your arms straight
- Position your body so that your shoulders are directly over your hands
Compression depth for an adult
At least 2 inches
Compression rate
100-120 per minute
Time allowances for interruptions to chest compressions
10 seconds
CPR cycle
30 compressions + 2 ventilations
When to stop CPR
- Signs of ROSC
- AED is ready to analyse the heart rhythm
- Other trained providers take over
- Too exhausted to continue
- Situation becomes unsafe
Compression depth for children
About 2 inches
One hand CPR technique
- Use either small child
- Only use if you can compress deep enough
- Use one hand instead of 2
- Place the heel of one hand in the center of the chest
- Compress the center of the chest about 2 inches
Compression techniques for infants
- Encircling thumbs
- Two-finger
Compression depth for infants
About 1 and 1/2 inches
2 rescuer CPR in adults
One person does 2 ventilations while the other does the 30 compressions. Ability to swap
2 rescuer CPR in infants/children
One lifeguard provides 2 ventilations and the other provides 15 chest compressions. Ability to swap
AED pad placement on adults and children over 8 years old
- adult pads
- one pad on the upper right side of chest and the other a few inches below the left armpit
AED on children
- use pediatric pads if available
- front/back placement to avoid pads touching

Yes
Safe to use an AED in water
No
