What to think about when deciding how to remove the person from the water

When to use a backboard at a board edge
This technique is used to remove a person who is unable to exit the water on their own when the exit point is at the wall. It requires a backboard and at least one assisting rescuer.
When to use a backboard at the steps
This technique is used to remove a person who is unable to exit the water on their own when the exit point is steps. It requires a backboard and at least one assisting rescuer.
When to use zero-depth entry
This technique is used to remove a person who is unable to exit the water on their own when the exit point is a zero-depth entry or a gradually sloping shoreline. It requires a backboard and at least one assisting rescuer.
When to use steep steps and/or moving water
This technique is used to remove a person who is unable to exit the water on their own when the exit point is steep steps, there is moving water, or both. It requires a backboard and at least one assisting rescuer.
When to use the rapid extraction for a small person
This technique is used to remove a small passive person from shallow water when a backboard is not immediately available.
When to use the walking assist
This technique is used to help a person who can stand and walk to exit shallow water.
When to use a beach drag
This technique is used to remove a person who is unresponsive or cannot stand and walk from the water when the exit point is a zero-depth entry or a gradually sloping shoreline. It can be performed with one or two rescuers.
