CN I

Olfactory nerve.
S (SVA from olfactory epithelium)
Passes through cribriform plate

2

CN II

Optic nerve.
S (SSA from the retina)
Passes through the Optic canal

3

CN III

Oculomotor nerve.
M (GSE to levator palpebrae superioris, ventral oblique, and dorsal/medial/ventral rectus) (GVE - PS - to pupil - constrictor pupillae - via the ciliary ganglion).
Passes through the orbital fissure

4

CN IV

Trochlear nerve.
M (GSE to dorsal oblique m.)
Passes through the orbital fissure

5

CN V

Trigeminal nerve.
B
Ophthalmic branch (GSA to globe, periorbita, nasal mucosae, and medial aspect of the palpebrae)
Passes through: Orbital fissure

Maxillary branch (GSA to upper lip, nasal mucosae, lateral aspect of the palpebrae)
Passes through: Round foramen and rostral alar foramen.

Mandibular branch (GSA to lower jaw, auriculotemporal area) (GSE to muscles of mastication)
Passes through: Oval foramen

6

CN VI

Abducens nerve.
M (GSE to retractor bulbi m. and lateral rectus m.)
Passes through orbital fissure

7

CN VII

Facial nerve.
B (GSE to mm. of facial expression) (SVA to tastebuds of rostral third of tongue) (GVE - PS - to salivary and lacrimal glands)
Passes through Stylomastoid foramen and internal acoustic meatus

8

CN VIII

Vestibulocochlear nerve.
S (SSA for hearing and balance)
Passes through internal acoustic meatus

9

CN IX

Glossopharyngeal nerve.
B (GVA/SVA from tongue and pharyngeal mucosa) (GSE to pharynx) (GVE - PS - to parotid and mucosal glands)
Passes through jugular foramen and tympanooccipital fissure.

10

CN X

Vagus nerve.
B (GSE/GVE - PS - to pharynx and esophagus) (GVA/GVE - PS - to heart, lungs, abdomen) (GSA/GVE - PS - to ear canal and epiglottis)
Passes through jugular foramen and tympanooccipital fissure

11

CN XI

(Spinal) Accessory nerve.
M (GSE to trapezius, omotransversarius, sternocephalicus, cleidocephalicus, and larynx via the recurrent laryngeal nerves)
Passes through jugular foramen and tympanooccipital foramen.

12

CN XII

Hypoglossal nerve.
M (GSE to extrinsic and intrinsic muscles of the tongue)
Passes through hypoglossal canal.
