What types of insects are in the order Diptera?
Flies, mosquitos, and midges (all have a single pair of wings)
What are some insects in the order Orthoptera?
Grasshoppers, locusts, and crickets
What type of insects are in the order Hemiptera?
True bugs such as cicadas, aphids, plant hoppers, assassin bugs, bed bugs ect. - all have piercing mouth parts
What insects are in the order Coleoptera?
Beetles- wings in hard cases
What insects are in the order Lepidoptera?
Butterflies and moths - metamorphosis and scales
What insects are in the order Hymenoptera?
Sawflies, wasps, bees, and ants
What class are spider mites in?
Arachnida
Define holometabolous
Larval stage looks completely different from imago stage and there is a pupal stage between them. Larvae feed on different food than the adult, common in coleopterans and Lepidopterans
What are the common stages in an insect lifecycle?
Egg, larvae (grub/ caterpillar), nymph (small version or adult), pupae (inactive cased form), imago (adult)
Define hemimetabolous
Nymphs look different from adults (lacking wings for example) and there is not a pupal stage, but nymph and adult often feed on the same food source
Define ametabolous
There is no difference between the nymphs and adults and there is no larvae or pupal stage
Define voltinism
The number of reproductive cycles an insect has in a year. Determined by the developmental time and the amount of food available
Define univoltine
One reproduction event a year
Define bivoltine
Two reproduction events a year
Define multivoltine
Developmental time is so fast that as long as food is available new reproduction events occur throughout the year
