Plant Tissues Flashcards
(16 cards)
What are the three main tissue types in plants?
Dermal, vascular, ground
What tissue makes up the epidermis?
Dermal tissue
What are the specialized cells in the epidermis?
Guard cells, trichomes, secretory cells, root hairs
What are the three types of ground tissue?
Parenchyma, collenchyma, and sclerenchyma
What is the parenchyma made out of?
Soft tissue used as a filler with lots of types of cells embedded in it. Cell walls are just made of cellulose
What is collenchyma made out of?
Harder tissue with cell walls or pectin and hemicellulose
What is sclerenchyma made of?
A very hard and durable tissue with lignin embedded in the cell walls
What are the two types of vascular tissue?
Xylem and phloem
What does xylem do?
Brings water and minerals up from the soil
What does phloem do?
Distributes sugars up or down the plant to where it is needed
Where are the xylem and phloem found?
In vascular bundles
What makes up the xylem?
Fibers, vessels, tracheid, and ray cells
What makes up the phloem?
Sieve tube members, companion cells, sclerenchyma fibers, parenchyma cells, and ray cells
What separates the xylem and phloem?
The vascular cambium- when the cambium layer divides it produces a new layer of xylem on the inside, and a new layer of phloem on the outside
What is bark?
Everything from the cambium to the surface
What is the proper name for the cork or outer bark layer?
Periderm- made up of cork cambium and phellogen
