Macromolecules Flashcards
(12 cards)
What makes up the 4 major classes of macromolecules
Carbon, nitrogen, phosphorus, oxygen, and hydrogen atoms
What is an important property of lipids
They’re hydrophobic
What are the three major groups of lipids?
Fatty acids, waxes, phospholipids
What are the major groups of organic molecules?
Carbs, lipids, proteins, nucleic acids, and high energy compounds
What do proteins do and what are they made of?
They perform the most essential functions of life and are made of amino acids
What’s one thing proteins are used for?
Enzymes
What are nucleotides?
The monomers that make up dna and rna
What is the central dogma?
DNA -> rna -> proteins
What is transcribed and what is translated in the central dogma?
Transcribe DNA and translate rna into proteins
What is the basic monomer that make up carbohydrates?
Monosaccharides
What is the most important carb
Glucose- the fundamental energy source of all life
What is a more complex carb called?
A polysaccharide - like chitin and cellulose
