Q
What cultural impacts effected China due to the CR?
A
- China had become a ‘cultural desert’ as 2600 writers, 142,000 teachers, 500 professors had been persecuted and only 8 plays had been approved
- Lasting effect from the red guards attack on the ‘4 olds’ as it was considered counter revolutionary to respect elders + parents – chaos
- Mao + Jiang were successful in eradicating old customs by controlling what people did, but couldn’t control what people thought e.g. the festival of death after the death of Zhou Enlai
