  • Willy returns home after an unsuccessful business trip and reveals that he just couldn’t ‘make it,’ as he kept veering off the road.
  • Due to this, Linda tries to convince Willy to work in New York instead of travelling away for work.
  • Willy disagrees, claiming his is vital in New England but eventually agrees.
  • Linda and Willy discuss Biff, who has returned home after labouring on farms and ranches for months, Willy calls Biff a ‘lazy bum,’ for pursuing a career in the wilderness.
  • Biff and Happy are discussing women amongst nostalgia and concern for their father upstairs when Biff admits he feels more fufilled by outdoor work than by his attempts to ‘make it big’ in the commercial, business world.
  • Alone in his kitchen, Willy begins to reminicise an earlier return home from work, when Biff and Happy were younger and both admired him as a hero.
