The Purpose of Debreifs
Oppportunity to share thoughts feelings and emotions linked to an effect away from the high-pressure, stressful situations. A chance to get things off your chest in a structured and supported way. .
Barriers to Effective Debreifs
- Inconsistency in team membership

- Creating a shared mental model

Key Concepts of a Debrief
- A facilitated event
- Establish its not mandatory and there are ground rules for free speaking
- Held in a private setting
- Designed to highlight chain of events and overall thoughts/feelings linked to the event
- Not designed to fit blame
- Supported way to reflect and share thoughts/feelings
- Highlight errors in organisational/cultural systems
- Support learning
- Reduce consistent failings/errors
- Improve patient safety/care
Pro’s to Hot Debreif
- Fresh memories of the event
- Teams more likely to attend
- Can get immediate asnwers, issues and support
- Determines potential need for cold debreif
Con’s to a Hot Debreif
- People may not be in the best space to reflect eg fatigued, emotional
- No time to rationalise and process events
Pro’s to Cold Debreif
- More time to rationsalise and process events
- More time for emotions to settle and be less fatigued
Con’s to Cold Debreif
- Memories of events changed or influenced
- More challenging to get everyone together

What needs to happen at the start of a hot debreif
- Introduce yourself
- Set ground rules
- Listen actively
- Display empathy
- Non-judgmental
- Everyone fit and well?
- Speak plainly for other agencies
- Overview of what happened
What needs to happen in the middle of a hot debreif
- Give each person opportunity to speak
- Notice body language
- Use open questions to help people to speak
- Start off with negatives then finish on positives
- Closed questions for clarifying
What needs to happen at the end of a hot debreif?
- Anyone have anything else they wish to add
- Give opportunities for further input post debrief
- Thank everyone for their efforts and participation
- Remind everyone about occ health and counselling opportunities
- Confirm what you will do with the information gained
- Contact information for further communications
